It’s summer.

The season of swimsuits.

The season of no school.

The season of OH MY GOD SO MUCH TIME WITH THE KIDS.

Some of you love it.

Some of us find it extremely overwhelming.

But I have found a life raft.

For me, something that makes the long summer days feel more manageable is the knowledge that I have a scheduled time that I will be getting away.

I call it a solo retreat.

Every quarter, with my husband’s blessing, I go to a hotel for 3 nights to rest and reset. I usually sleep, work out outside, read, lay by the pool, pray and do macro-planning for the year.

It takes planning ahead. It takes budgeting. Sometimes I do feel guilty leaving my kids and husband.

But when I’m there, I remember exactly why.

I have space to miss them again.

Here’s how I look at it.

You take your car to get oil changes, right?

If you don’t, your car will break down and you will need a tow and it will be a bigger situation.

The same is true with us.

A solo retreat is my preventative maintenance so I don’t break down.

And it doesn’t have to be 3 nights away.

It can be an afternoon, or sleeping in and being left alone in your bed until 12noon on a Saturday. Make it work for you.

Define and plan your own solo retreat.

If this is something you feel resistance to, I get it.

Our culture values more, more, more. Women who “do it all,” #mombosses and “boss babes.” That achievement mentality is very deeply engrained in our cultural norms, and as a result, it’s embedded in our social consciousness.

Being a mom who takes time to rest is very counter culture.

In fact, it’s taken me years to undo my mommy martyr mentality… that urge to take on more, to deny help, to believe that I do not need support, to keep going even when I’m slowly breaking down inside.

Invest in your rest.

That’s exactly what a solo retreat is.

It’s solitude. Quiet. Rest.

It’s the chance to feel gratitude again.

The space to remember how much I love my life.

You are worth it.

Do you believe that?
