I remember everything about that moment.
My mouth went dry.
My stomach was freefalling into the driveway beneath my feet.
I remember what I was wearing. The new fall crispness in the air. The look of dread on my oldest’s face.
Why had Dad left without saying anything?
The hollow sadness in his eyes.
At 11 years old, he may not have been able to articulate the totality of the situation, but inside, he knew.
And so did I.
Our issues had been bubbling under the surface for years. I’d been warned this would happen so many times.
And yet, there I was on that Sunday afternoon.
Standing on our driveway.
On the one hand, I was completely stunned. It would be weeks — months even — before I fully processed what had happened.
But on the other hand, all I could think was: It finally happened.
That start to the fall is usually my most favorite time of the year.
But this day would mark the beginning of my worst nightmare.
My family living in different spaces.
My kids living out of duffel bags.
My heart, shattered into a million pieces. With no hope of coming back together.
This was my season of suffering.
Are you in one right now?
